What I offer

How I work with writers

I work across feature film and television — at any stage of development, from treatment to final polish. My approach combines analytical rigour with emotional depth; I'm just as interested in what you have to say, and why the project is meaningful to you, as I am in how it is being expressed on the page.

Script Coverage & Notes

A detailed written response to your script — premise, structure, character, dialogue, voice, and commercial context. Candid, curious, and specific. Useful whether you're developing independently or preparing to submit to producers or funding bodies.

Development Support

Sustained engagement as you work on a draft. I read each version carefully and give notes that build on what we've already discussed — tracking progress, identifying what's working, and helping you find your own solutions to what isn't yet.

Creative Collaboration

A more open-ended approach across multiple drafts or projects. We can work together to build a portfolio of work that feels like it represents you and your voice in the best possible way. Drawing on my production-facing background, I can offer perspective on how your work might be packaged and positioned in the marketplace.

Consultation

A useful starting point when you need a thinking partner rather than just a set of notes — someone to test ideas against, who can ask the right questions to get to the heart of the premise.

Background

Who I am

I work in UK independent film and TV — across development, production, and the financing structures that surround them. I understand the commercial pressures that shape what gets made, and I hold that understanding in mind when working editorially.

I have a Script Development Diploma from the NFTS, and a keen interest in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, which affects how I listen both to you and to your characters.

Testimonials

What writers say

"Hire him. Whatever stage your project is at, Josh is the person it needs - right now.

I trust Josh's taste with my life. When I'm developing, he's who I pitch it to, who I send the first draft to, first name on the team list for a table-read, a screening. When I need someone to be both kind and severe - to be an audience and a critic, I ask Josh.

Why? Because aside from his deeply lovely aura and spectacles, what he offers as a professional is, I think, really rare. He is both an artist and a producer - a writer and a maker. A wide-lens view structuralist and a forensic man of detail. You will struggle to find someone as creatively literate, as pragmatic without cynicism, open-minded without imprecision, or as artistically ambitious without snobbishness; even if you did, they definitely won't be as fun to work with.

When I tell Josh an idea and he laughs, I know I should write it. When something's not working, I know he can help me find the right tool to fix it.

Even writing this testimonial - a bit of me wonders… hmm, is this good? What would Josh think?"

Ben Ashenden, Writer & Actor, Deep Cover (Amazon), Bill's Included (BBC One)

"Josh is always my first port of call when I need eyes on a script. Not only does he have a writer's eye for character, dialogue, detail and flair, he also has a fantastic grasp on the fundamental building blocks of story; something that is surprisingly hard to come by. He will immediately identify what's working and not working, but he also has an uncanny ability to find things in your own work you didn't realise were there and your scripts become elevated and richer as a result."

Joe Hampson, Writer, Feel Good (Netflix)

"I've worked with Josh on numerous projects for both TV and feature development. His notes are always extensive, insightful and paramount in moving the projects forward to their most creatively exciting iterations. In addition he keeps an eye on industry placement so the work feels geared towards giving it the best chance of realisation in a constantly shifting landscape. Truthfully, unless I have no choice, I always work with Josh."

Sam Woolf, Writer & Actor, The Artists' Partnership/Sayle Screen
